From the 13th to the 15th of September 2019, something totally out-of-this-world came to Devon; The Evolve UK Open 2019. This was an action pact weekend of racing, events, good food, camping, parties and general e-skate loving to celebrate this unique and growing culture of electric skateboarding and it’s riders. The best part about the whole thing though was that it took place right on The Board Basements doorstep, never has sunny Totnes been more exciting! Of course The Board Basement jumped at the chance to be the events main retail sponsor and go and hang out for the weekend.

The E-Skate community has been steadily growing over the last few years and are a very popular vehicle of choice for commuting and leisure use today. Evolve Electric Skateboards have been at the forefront of technological developments of this awesome mode of transport. Electric Skateboards give riders a convenient, eco friendly, low cost and FUN way to get from A-B, it's not surprising that it has such a huge following these days. What a brilliant idea to set up an event to showcase this epic subculture and what a perfect brand to reprensent it.

So Saturday was the day for the competition. E-Skateboarders from around the world (Holland, Germany, France, Russia...even as far as Australia) rocked up to race. From 1-8pm, races were held at Wheeldon Motocross Center on their all-weather indoor arena dirt track. This all-terrain off-road course was perfect to put the e-skaters and their machines to the test with its customised course of crazy whoops/ rollers and intense berns, kind of like a Snowboard Boardercross course?!

5 riders fight it out per heat, neck and neck, side by side, racing to the death. 2 laps are required, fasted rider wins. There are falls, there are elbows, there are dropped remotes, there are tears…it’s nail biting to watch and definately had spectators on the edge of their seats from start to finish. The race is open to all levels and to ALL electric skateboards, so its a real battle of the brands too. TRAMPA Boards were also invited to attend to amp up the competition between the electric skateboard brands.

I bet by now you are wondering who won????! Well, young gun Tyler Zahabi from Evolve Skateboards (not rigged I swear!) bagged himself the top spot, with Andy Brind from Trampa Boards in 2nd and Moja Reeves in 3rd. A special mention must also be given to The Board Basements most enthusiastic Evolve Skateboards customer and all-around awesome guy, Mike Sturtridge. It was Mikey’s first ever electric skateboard contest and he held his own against the experienced riders from around the globe and came out with some solid placings.

On Sunday, The Board Basement hosted a group ride together with all the electric skateboarders in the beautiful grounds of Powderham Castle, with The Earl Of Devon himself, Lord Courtenay (otherwise known as Charlie!). Charlie is always looking for new and exciting ways to explore and make use of the magical grounds at Powderham Castle. Using Electric Skateboards to do this was a perfect fit as they are low impact on the environment and eco friendly…..not to mention super fun. The sun was beaming down on the luishous green english countryside and the turnout was great, even if some were blowing off the cobwebs from the party the night before! There was an expanse of green fields to play and practice slides and carves on, then some wooded areas for some different terrain to experiment with, and of course some hills to put the boards to good use. Spirits were high and progression was visible in the chilled out environment. It was a really nice send off for the weekend of fun for the competitors who had travelled from far away lands!
