The Search For The Yeti Is Finally Over- Yeti Coolers | The Board Basement
A Yeti Cooler is a portable ice box that can keep up with adventures. They are also perfect for summer “staycations”. Yeti create high end coolers for hardcore outdoor enthusiasts. They are all about quality not quantity. Yeti have ignited a trend in a very niche market of dedicated outdoor explorers, BUT that's not to say you can't use your Yeti cool box for chilling in your back garden and keeping your beers cold. That's the good thing about Yeti, their versatility. They make different size/ spec coolers for different occasions. The Yeti Tundra is great for group expeditions, the Yeti Roadie is perfect for those solo expeditions and a Yeti Hopper Flip is just a good guy to have around. Yeti also makes premium insulated mugs, tumblers and water bottles from the Yeti Rambler Range.
How Did Yeti Coolers Start?
Yeti was started in 2006 by 2 wild loving brothers, Roy and Ryan Seiders. They wanted to create their dream cooler bag, with all the features and components they could possibly ever want. They wanted to use first hand experience “on the ground” research, rather than usual market research. They wanted something that would withstand the beating that they would serve to it on a daily basis. They wanted something that would perform, no matter what the environment. They wanted something perfect.
With the brothers dedication and passion, they made this possible. Yeti was born.
So What Makes Yeti Coolers Sell So Well?
It's not hard to see the appeal of a Yeti Cool Box. They are strong, sturdy and look like something out of a James Bond film. That high caliber image and top quality spec is something that many will desire. People will aspire to have that rugged, outdoor image that Yeti convey, almost like a status symbol. But then also they want the confidence that their cooler box will deliver what they need. Yetis can keep ice for days, have ridiculous amounts of insulation and are pretty indestructible. The finish on them is top notch, the plastic is smoother and they just feel expensive. Yeti have taken the market by storm and are flying out of the door quicker than you can say “007”. They have now generated millions in revenue and are still growing rapidly. We are pretty chuffed that we can be a part of that here at The Board Basement.
What Are Yeti Coolers Made Of?
Yeti Coolers are made out of a similar process to Kayaks and highway barriers using a process called Rotational Molding. Yetis use Polyethylene in their coolers, this is a thermoplastic that's easily moldable above a certain temperature and then cools solid. During this process, it is softened and then rotated inside a mold causing the plastic to disperse and stick to the sides of the mold. This creates a seamless design without joints and also gives Yeti coolers its thick durable outer shell. The walls and lid are then injected with pressure injected foam; 2 inches thick for the walls and 3 inches thick for the lid. This foam allows the ice to be kept cooler for longer through “thermal conduction”. The lid is then sealed with a gasket, the same sort of one you would find on high-end refrigerators. The thickness and tight tolerances help keep the contents chilled for longer as it has fewer places to escape. The coolers are also UV and dry ice compatible and can handle much higher temperatures than your traditional coolers without deforming. The Interlock Lid System that creates a secure barrier against heat.
Yeti Latches are made from durable rubber (T-Rex Lid Latches) that last just as long as your cooler does. The whole thing is hard to dystroy; it can be driven over, thrown from a cliff, stood on by a 500Ib man called Mike, and even attacked by a bear....and still survive.
Other features that make a Yeti so alluring are the Bearfoot non-Slip Feer that stop your cooler from sliding around, Anchorpoint Tie-Down Slots for easy mounting to a boat, trailer or space ship…...and a Coldlock Gasket that circles the length of the lid blocking out external heat and keeping the cold in. It also features the Neverfail Hinge System- an interlocking design with 2 hinge pins which means the hinge will NEVER break, and at the end of the day the Vortex Drain System helps with quick and easy draining and is leakproof. BOOM!
Why Has Yeti Got A Premium Price Tag?
A Yeti Cooler has become an iconic brand. It portrays a certain image to the outside world, essentially you are paying for “the name”. Like other famous designer brands (Gucci, Dior!!), there will always be people that buy into them. But they have only become so iconic and popular because they are so well made and fit for purpose, a Yeti will not disapoint. There are some cheaper brand coolers, but none with the high quality military type construction of the Yeti. For example, the Tundra is great for hunting and the largest one can even store 350 cans of beer! The lid is so sturdy you can use it as a seat and chilling station to watch the world go buy. There is basically a Yeti chest for everyone, whatever your adventure. This Yeti phenomenon has taken the world by storm and warrants the hefty price tag.
How Long Does Ice Last In A Yeti Cooler?
One of the most important elements to a cooler box is the ice retention ie: how long it keeps the ice cold. A Yeti Cooler can keep ice for as long as 5-7 days, that's a crazy amount of time. Think of the adventures you can have in that time.
Do You Have To Prep Your Yeti Cooler?
There are certain things you can do to maximise ice retention in a Yeti…..1) Cool down your cooler before using it, you don't want waste ice by cooling it down initially 2) Use enough ice, the guideline is twice as much as your cooler 3) Use cold ice, colder than freezing, means less melting 4) Use a combination of block ice and cube ice to keep the contents cooler for longer 5) Eliminate air in your cooler and fill air pockets with towels/ newspapers instead- air will accelerate ice melt 6) Don't drain the water, it will help to insulate the rest of the ice 7) Keep your Yeti Cooler out of direct sunlight 8) Limit the amount of times you go into your Yeti 9) You can use dry ice, the Tundra and Roadie are dry ice compatible.
Fun fact, if you sprinkle rock salt on your Yeti contents it will keep it colder for longer.
What is Yeti Ice?
Yeti Ice is an ice substitute ice pack that's packed full of science and used to supplement your regular ice in your yeti cooler and keep it cold for longer. It will sacrifice its own coldness to keep other ice colder for longer. It's a special shape which retains its cool temps for longer AND the best thing is, all your regular ice will stick to your Yeti Ice Pack, making it so much easier to clean out and the end of the day.
